Condition of black fungus patient “Critical”; “Treatment going on according to protocol,” SMCH
Suffering from Mucormycosis, 42-year-old Karimganj resident Alok Deb’s condition has further deteriorated. He was first admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital on June 26 with post Covid complications and there the doctors detected it to be a case of black fungus.
On June 6, the patient was referred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for better treatment. As his condition improved, the doctors discharged him from the hospital on June 20, to continue treatment at home. It has been diagnosed to be a case of rhino- orbital cerebral mucormycosis.
After reaching home, he had episodes of oral and nasal bleeding following which he has been admitted to the SMCH again. “On arrival, started on injection Amphotericin B with oral antifungal agent posaconazole with insulin, injectable antibiotic and Intravenous fluids,” informed Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice principal of SMCH.
He informed, the MRI of the brain done on 30.06.2021 shows features of fungal rhinosinusistis with right optic nerve involvement. “Nasal endoscopy and debridement done on 02.07.2021. Endoscopy revealed necrotic tissue with extended upto skull base. Patient has received three doses of retro-orbital Amphotericin B injection,” Dr. Gupta’s medical bulletin added.
“Patient is getting treatment as per state protocol and all supportive medication by a board of Doctors,” stated Dr. Bhaskar Gupta.
