From JNV to entrepreneurship to CNBC’s ‘Khiladi No. 1; Meet Karimganj’s Jakera Choudhury
The market was dicey last week. But flying through the turbulence, Jakera Choudhury secured 18.79% returns on her investment to be CNBC Awaaz’s ‘Khiladi No. 1’. It is a show where three analysts’ investments get tracked for a week and the winner gets to be a part of the show. Choudhury’s 18.79% was better than Ashish Kyal’s 6.4% and Sham Chandak’s -6.77%.
Jakera Choudhury is a resident of Sutarkandi Karimganj who did her schooling in Jawhar Navodaya Vidyalaya Karimganj. After higher secondary, in 2008, she moved to Hyderabad and completed her B-Tech from Dr. VRK Women’s College of Engineering and Technology. She had also enrolled for M-Tech but other ideas appealed to her more and she decided against pursuing higher studies. Instead, she enrolled herself for certification courses in fundamentals of market analysis. Jakera Choudhury is now security analyst and advises on stocks. “My brother is in finance and he motivated me to get into it,” says Choudhury.
The CNBC’s ‘Khiladi No. 1’ says she enjoys decoding the charts of companies and spends a lot of time studying them. “I follow investor’s call, corporate announcements. Understanding the psychology of buyers and sellers in order to get better returns is what I enjoy doing the most,” she adds. The CNBC show was “out of the blue” for Choudhury. She got a call from the leading business channel and Jakera Choudhury took on the opportunity.
She has been investing in stocks since 2014 however, she only started trading in 2020. “Trading needs you to sit in front of the screen (Computer/phone/tab) for a long period of time. Also, this is my passion not full time profession. I run my own company and that needs me to devote a lot of time,” adds Jakera Choudhury.
She is co-founder and director of Jasarena India Private Limited which is an event management and promotion company headquartered in Hyderabad. Jakera Choudhury’s company manages events and promotions for a wide range of clients including the likes of ZEE5. Not only in Hyderabad, but in other parts of the country too.
She too hails from Barak Valley where most parents believe you either become an engineer or a doctor and everything else implies to nothing. She too followed the trend but then went on to chalk her own path. An entrepreneur, a market analyst, a humanitarian Jakera Choudhury defines herself as a “voice” and not an “echo”. She definitely didn’t go with the flow as that is for dead fish to do. She instead worked on strengthening her own fins to follow against the flow. Speaking with Barak Bulletin, she says she wants to “empower” women.
“Any housewives in Barak Valley and other parts want to learn about stock market and intends to build a career, I am willing to provide free training to all of them,” she says. Adding, “In our society, women are still prohibited from stepping outdoors for work. They can get empowered and become self dependent by knowing more about the stock markets. They don’t need to trade, they can earn by punching orders or doing something else with the knowledge they acquire.”
From a small village like Sutarkandi which shares borders with Bangladesh, on the back of knowledge, education and passion, Jakera Choudhury has emerged as an influencer. She is followed by more than 36,000 users on Twitter and most importantly, individuals and organisations make purchase decisions based on her analysis. She is chased by News channels while she devotes her time in becoming a larger employer. She shows, “Where there is a will, there is a way!”
