“Assured full support towards the speedy initiation of the Greenfield Airport,” Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy after meeting Jyotiraditya Scindia

The long-awaited dream of Silchar to get a Greenfield airport has receives a huge boost today. Back in February 2021, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation had revealed that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has conducted a pre-feasibility study to set up a Greenfield Airport in Silchar.

Today, in a tweet by Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, he has claimed that the incumbent Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia assured full support towards the speedy initiation of the Greenfield Airport in Silchar.

The 3 sites under consideration for the proposed Greenfield airport are – Kharail Tea Estate at Dolu, Dolu Tea Estate itself and the Silcoorie Tea Estate. AAI will finalise the best-suited site in consultation with the state government.

After a meeting with Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP Rajdeep Roy tweeted, “#MOCA Minister @JM_Scindia ji assured full support towards the speedy initiation of the Greenfield Airport at #Silchar. Looking forward to a 360deg connectivity to #BarakValley soonest!” The Greenfield airport project will surely receive a huge motivational boost after this assurance from the Union Minister of Civil Aviation.

Back in January 2020, a five-member team visited various locations in Silchar to survey the proposed land to set up a new Greenfield Airport. The team was led by Barun Kumar, joint GM, AAI which had Manjit Singh, Soumen Poddar, Sunil Kumar, Rajpal Lawasia, and S Ahmed (State Transport). In August 2019, one of the most experienced officers of the Airport Authority of India, Executive Director, AAI, Sanjeev Jindal visited Silchar.

In July 2019, replying to a question asked by Guwahati MP Queen Oja, the then Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri, said that the ministry has granted ‘In Principle’ approval for setting up a new Greenfield Airport at Hollongi, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh whereas for Silchar Airport, AAI has requested the state government to share the land details for conducting ‘pre-feasibility study’. Since then, many top officials and delegations have visited Silchar on separate for surveying the land for International Airport.
