Cachar reports 372 cases, 3 including a 21-year-old declared dead in last 24 hours; Jan 17 COVID Update, Hailakandi 90, Karimganj 205

Post festive spike in COVID cases across Barak Valley. According to National Health Mission, Assam Cachar district has reported 372 cases on Monday up from 159 on Sunday. The bulletin stated 16 individuals have tested positive on RTPCR while 356 samples have tested positive on the Rapid Antigen Test Kits. 

This is by far the highest number of cases reported by Cachar according to the NHM data. Despite the spike, Cachar remains fourth highest in terms of district with high caseloads in Assam. Kamrup Metro tops the list with 1,491 cases followed by Dibrugarh with 489 and Tinsukia with 407 cases. Karimganj reported 205 cases on Monday, significantly higher than 42 of Sunday. 90 cases have been reported in Hailakandi.

Not only the number of cases, deaths have also increased manifold in Cachar district. Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital informed that three patients have been declared dead in the COVID wards of SMCH in the last 24 hours ending at 5:00 pm on January 17.

93-year-old Kali Pada Bhowmik a resident of Meherpur, Silchar was admitted to the hospital on January 6. After battling it for 11 days, he has succumbed on January 17 at 6:45 am. He was suffering from Covid Pneumonia, Acute Kidney Injury and Hypertension.

65-year-old Jayanti Sen Gupta from Malugram, Silchar was admitted to the hospital on January 15 and she succumbed in the COVID ward on January 16 at 6:45 pm. She was suffering from Acute Kidney Injury and Pneumonia.

21-year-old Bijoy Kumar Singh who is a resident of Bahadurpur, Cachar became the youngest COVID patient to have succumbed this year. He was admitted to the hospital on January 10 and the doctors at SMCH declared him dead on January 17, at 9:15 am. He too was suffering from Acute Kidney Injury along with Tubercular Meningitis and Covid Pneumonia.

Dr. Gupta informed that 39 patients are currently admitted to the COVID wards of the Hospital. Three patients are on ventilators while 13 patients are on Oxygen support.

The data shared by Cachar District Health Department, Cachar has reported 403 cases on Monday and out of them, 233 of them have tested positive on RTPCR while 170 on RAT. According to the district’s data, there are 1,731 active cases in Cachar and out of them, 149 are in hospitals while 2,686 patients are in home isolation.
