
Daily wager dies in Cachar after metal pole falls on his head; Contractor didn’t provide any safety gears
The falling of an electrical pole has cost the life of a daily wager in Badarpur-Masimpur GP of Cachar district. Mistrilal Goala, was employed by a contractor for installing electric poles and lines in the Kokilapur village of Masimpur GP. The contractor was from the Electricity Department and had employed impoverished labourers like Goala for electrification works in that village, without any safety gears or technical training. This unfortunate incident happened on Monday afternoon.
The deceased Goala, was employed by a contractor named Hannan. While on work, the labourers were manning the lines of electrical cables, suddenly one metal electrical pole fell off and injured Mistrilal in the head. This has caused heavy blood loss and panic broke in that area. The gathered labourers and people couldn’t help him in any way and hence was rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment, but little did they know it was way too late. As the injury was severe, Goala died in the road and he was declared brought dead in the hospital.
Mistrilal Goala was the sole bread earner of the big family of three sons, a daughter, his wife and others, all depended on him for two meals a day and other necessities. It is being said that, Mistrilal was an extremely soft-spoken, well behaved person and eventually in everyone’s Good Books in the village.
This is a huge loss for the entire family and caused anxiety among his neighbours. It’s worth mentioning here that, deaths due to lack of safety equipments in our country is a huge issue. A 2021 study by the International Labour Organization said 165 out of every 1,000 construction workers are injured daily in India, the actual figures can be far worse.
