Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink: Supply to Silchar disconnected, “25 men at work” EE

Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink. The famous saying from the rhyme of the ancient mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge, has turned true in Silchar town as the PHE’s water supply has been disconnected. Electricity supply to most parts of flood affected Silchar were already disconnected to avoid the risk of electrocution.

Today morning, the water supply to Silchar town got disrupted. Speaking with Barak Bulletin, the Executive Engineer of PHE Silchar, Megha Das explained, “Due to the flooding water, there is a significant rise in current or waves. The pressure exerted has taken a toll on the suction pipe. It has been confirmed that the suction pipe has been washed away by the flow of the flooding river.”

Das added, “This has happened to the main plant and so, the intake of water to the plant stays disrupted. 25 men are at work to fix the issue but at this stage, it is impossible to make a comment on the timeline. The extent of devastation due to the natural calamity is so huge, that it has become very difficult to predict the status of the work in progress.”

Though he was hesitant in providing a timeline, Das confirmed, “There is no way water supply can be restored today. The disruption will affect all the areas under the Silchar Town Scheme and since this has happened to the suction pipe of main plant, it becomes very difficult to provide an alternative.”

It is worth mentioning here that the water level of river Barak has steadied at 21.38 metres. Early morning, the water level was falling at the rate of 1cm per hour, but since 10am, it has remain steady at 21.38 metres still way above the danger level – 19.83 metres.
