Divers roped in to fix the plant but water supply remains suspended today; “Not possible to share a timeline,” EE
After underground suction pipes of Sadarghat Water Plant got washed away due to flooding water and landslips, the PHE was forced to the disrupt the supply to areas under Silchar Township. Since yesterday, large part of the city is living without supply.
As tanks and reservoirs get empty, irritation and panic level among the general public are on the rise. Many want to know when will the water supply get restored. The answer from Megha Das, Executive Engineer of PHE Silchar Division is simple, “It is impossible to share a timeline at this moment.”
It is an act of God that has disrupted the water supply. Not just the water supply, daily life has come to a standstill in what is the worst flood witnessed by Cachar district in the last decade.
Megha Das has informed that the PHE has roped in divers who are diving into the depth to fix the suction pipes of the plant. “The work is going on in war footing and we are following the best practices. If it was in dry circumstances, it would not have taken so much time. But here, the conditions are extreme. The depth is such that two human being will drown, then there is the risk of electrocution. A small mistake can turn out to be fatal as the margin of error is very little. In such a scenario, we can do very little apart from seeking cooperation,” added Executive Engineer Das.
He informed that water tankers are plying on the roads and they are providing supplies to the relief camps under Silchar town. Locals who are facing a scarcity of water at home can fetch from those tanker.
