Silchar – Karimganj passenger train service restored, Badarpur – New Haflong to start within one week

What comes in as a major relief for the people of Barak Valley, the railway services between Silchar and Karimganj has been restored. Yesterday, the Silchar – Durlabcherra train left Silchar Railway Station in the evening and reached the destination successfully. The train services in this route were disrupted after river water flooded the railway tracks.

The CPRO of NF Railways, Sabyasachi De informed that the train services were restored as planned.

The NF Railways had also carried out trial runs between Badarpur and New Haflong section. The passenger trains in that section was supposed to start on June 20. “The rain and the floods delayed our plans, The revised target for us is to start the passenger train services in this section within a week,” informed De.

It is worth mentioning here that Silchar is under an unprecedented deluge since June 19. Most of the city is affected by flood. This comes in as the second flood within a month. In May, the North Cachar Hills suffered flash floods due to which, 61 sites in the Badarpur – Lumding section witnessed severe landslips and other damage. 45 sites have been restored following which the NF Rail conducted the trial run.

There are 16 sites that had incurred severe damage between Lumding and New Haflong. “We are optimistic that we will achieve our target of restoration of passenger trains from July 10. Provided, we do not encounter another severe calamity,” added the CPRO.

On May 14, the last train for Guwahati had departed from Silchar and it got stuck at Ditokcherra. Since then, train services between Silchar and Guwahati which is also a lifeline for Agartala has remained suspended.
