Cachar Police confiscates 27 sacks of Burmese Supari from Aizawl – Guwahati bus, two arrested
The illegal transportation of Burmese Supari has found yet another blatant way. After trucks and trains, this time the police found 27 sacks of Burmese Supari from an overnight bus in Lailapur. The Network Travels bus was traveling from Aizawl to Guwahati.
This huge consignment was confiscated last night during a routine inspection of the overnight buses by the Lailapur Police Patrol Outpost. The bus was illegally smuggling 27 sacks of Burmese Supari inside its luggage cabinet. The bus with registration number AS01NC2411 travelling from Aizawl was headed to Guwahati, where it was stopped by Lailapur Police at the check post.
The police have arrested the two drivers of the bus for their involvement in this illegal circuit. The two arrested have been identified as Sonowar Hussein from Kalgasiya in Barpeta district and Gopal Sharma from Bakoridoloni in Biswanath district. Both the drivers along with the bus were brought to the Lailapur patrol outpost in Assam Mizoram border for further investigation.
This has created a huge inconvenience for the passengers of the bus. Later, the police arranged another bus from Network Travels for the passengers to reach Guwahati. Network Travels is a Guwahati-based bus operator in Assam and Northeast India established in 1992.
The nexus operating this illegal transportation bypasses the taxation system which forces the Central and the State governments losses worth several crores. Cachar Police had conducted an aggressive drive to uproot the nexus and big names were arrested but all of them have secured bails and it seems the nexus is operating again.
