Assam University Students’ Union moves for impeachment of President Subhamoy Chanda, registrar’s notification awaited

The election saga of the Students’ Union continues at the Assam University Silchar. The elected Students’ Union had signed a resolution to move for impeachment of the president-elect Subhamoy Chanda seven days back on August 1. On Monday, the Union voted in favour of the impeachment. Out of 8 office bearers and 35 counsellors of different departments, 24 signed the resolution.

Based on the previous allegations brought upon President Chanda which included a case of sexual harassment and that of violating UGC norms by enrolling in two courses, a section of the union, heavily motivated by the rebel group moved for impeachment. This letter was signed by 3 office bearers and two counsellors of the union. The AUSU Constitution states that impeachment notice must be given seven days in advance to the President of the Union and accordingly after seven days, on August 9, he was impeached with one-half majority voting yay for the impeachment of the president who won uncontested in the election as Pallab Dey mysteriously withdrew his candidature.

Following the rules of the AUSU Constitution, the resolution was signed by General Secretary- Arunav Dutta, Sports Secretary- Nabakishor Akura, Magazine Secretary-Hijam Bijeta Singh, Assistant General Secretary (Female)- Srinjana Mitra and Cultural Secretary- Rohit Rishi.

After this resolution was passed, the Vice Chancellor was notified the same through the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW). The notice requested the authority of the Vice Chancellor to notify the resolution for impeachment against the President of AUSU. The Registrar of the varsity asked for one working day to notify the impeachment resolution.

Barak Bulletin reached out to Subhamoy Chanda who denied this impeachment notice and said, “I don’t have any idea about any such thing”. When asked whether he was notified, he repeated his comment.
