Not Carol but Kirtan echoes in Silchar’s Presbyterian church as disciples choose unusual mode of celebration

No “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, not even “Last Christmas”, the “Words of Wisdom” at presbyterian church in Silchar’s Jail Road are – kirtans.

Much like the rest of the world, Silchar is celebrating the auspicious occasion. Huge crowds can be observed in many places of the city, most – definitely at the presbyterian church also known as Oriental School. People belonging to all communities have gathered there dressed in red to be a part of the celebrations.

After a few untoward incidents in the last couple of years, there was a heavy deployment of Central Forces and State Police Officials to maintain peace and tranquility. Till the time the report was filed, there has been no report of any law and order situation.

What has attracted the attention of the visitors this time is kirtan. Devotees of Jesus Christ at the Church were seen dancing with dhols and chanting various popular kirtans.

When asked why they were doing so, one of the devotees replied, “There are many disciples of Jesus Christ belonging to the Bengali community. For the Bengali community, Kirtan is our main mode of devotional expression. So, we perform Kirtans. We call it Jishu-Kirtan.”
