Family alleges Police inaction against youth accused of marrying a minor girl in Silchar, “Will write to CM,” father
Police did not take action against a youth accused of marrying a minor girl in Silchar’s Rangpur despite the Chief Minister’s strict instructions. The father of the victim minor girl demanded justice by raising this sensational allegation. Bimal Chandra Laskar, the father of the 16-year-old girl called a press conference at Silchar Press Club on Sunday and sought the intervention of the higher authorities to get justice against the dubious role of the police.
He said that Bimal Debnath of Rongpur Karatigram eloped his daughter studying in Class 9 from tuition on August 25 last year. About twenty days later, police rescued the allegedly abducted minor and according to him, “pressurised “him to take her.
But he did not agree to take her as the young man who kidnapped the minor girl was not caught by the Police. At that time, Laskar alleged that the police force went to his house and pressurised him. The police informed him that the youth did not marry her daughter or was in any relationship with her.Meanwhile, a picture of the minor married to the accused youth was found on Facebook.
“If they did not marry why is she wearing the sacred bangles and vermilion on her forehead? This is a clear cut case of child marriage against which the chief minister of Assam has issued a strict warning. Yet the Police officials are not taking any action against the boy. Instead, they keep saying that it is my daughter’s fault. Yes, my daughter is a minor and might have got lured into making a mistake but what explains the inaction from the Police?,” questioned the father at the press conference held in Silchar Press Club.
Currently, the minor is at a shelter home. Laskar is adamant that he will not take custody of his daughter unless the accused criminal is not arrested under the Child Marriage Act. Besides, Laskar sought an investigation into the transparency of the police administration and the IO’s role in this case.
