Assam Indigenous People Protection Committee voices Against Election Commission’s delimitation draft

The Assam Indigenous People Protection Committee (AIPPC) held a press conference today at Rongpur, vehemently opposing the Election Commission’s recent move to reserve the Silchar Lok Sabha seat for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates in their delimitation draft. The committee also expressed its strong disapproval of the decision to reduce two assembly seats in Barak Valley.

Speaking to reporters, Jasim Uddin Laskar, the General Secretary of AIPPC, expressed concern over the reduction of two assembly seats in Barak Valley, questioning the implications for the constituents affected by this decision. Laskar stated, “What will the people of these constituencies do now? Silchar Lok Sabha constituency has a majority of general population compared to scheduled castes. Not even 25% of the population belongs to the SC category. Therefore, the seat should be allocated for general candidates. It seems that the Election Commission of India has transformed into the BJP Commission of India. We extend our full support to the Barak Bandh.”

It maybe mentioned that the AIPPC had also voiced its opinion against the Citizenship Amendment Bill proposed by the Central Government back in 2019.
