Cachar Police manhandles specially-abled youth who joined Congress’ protest against delimitation draft; forcefully put into police van
In a display of resolute unity, the 12-hour strike organised by the Barak Valley Democratic Front (BDF), Congress, and other political parties has garnered widespread support, as shops continue to remain closed in defiance of police efforts to dislodge the strike. Reports indicate that approximately 200 individuals, including Abhijit Paul, the District Cachar Congress President, have been detained by the police from various parts of the district.
Amidst the ongoing strike, a distressing incident of lack of apathy by the Assam Police has come to light, drawing widespread condemnation and criticism. A handicapped youth, who joined the protest of Congress against delimitation, was subjected to mistreatment by police officials infront of Cachar DC Office. The young man had participated in the protest to express his grievances against the proposed shift of constituencies, citing his inability to transit as he faces challenges due to disability. Shockingly, the police forcibly lifted the youth, grabbing his arms and legs, before placing him into a police vehicle. This incident has raised serious concerns among empathetic citizens, who question the motive behind such rough treatment of a disabled individual merely exercising his democratic rights.
The strike, organised to protest the delimitation draft proposed by the Election Commission of India, has become a powerful symbol of dissent among the residents of Barak Valley. The draft suggests a reduction in the number of Legislative Assembly seats from 15 to 13, despite the valley’s population exceeding four million. This decision has sparked outrage as it is viewed as an attempt to undermine the representation of Barak Valley, disregarding its significant population growth.
In Silchar, like other parts of Barak Valley, the people have rallied behind the strike, resulting in the closure of numerous shops. Despite the presence of police, the bustling business hubs of the city remained deserted throughout the day. However, a limited number of vehicles were observed providing essential transportation services in case of emergencies.
While schools, colleges, and government offices were instructed to remain open, their attendance was noticeably low, likely influenced by the prevailing strike atmosphere. Notably, the authorities had explicitly ordered these institutions to continue their operations despite the ongoing strike.
As the strike continues to gain momentum, it highlights the deep-rooted discontent among the residents of Barak Valley. The demand for fair representation and the preservation of existing assembly constituencies echoes loudly, sending a strong message to the authorities. The reaction of the Assam Police towards the handicapped protester adds another dimension to the ongoing controversy, leaving citizens questioning the actions and motives of the law enforcement agency.
