Women stage sit-in protest in Silchar demanding action against increasing women violence throughout India

In a powerful display of unity and determination, around 50 women from diverse backgrounds, including retired ACS officials, entrepreneurs, and lawyers, organised a sit-in protest in front of the Khudiram statue today. The protest was held to demand the restoration of peace in Manipur and justice for the perpetrators who committed heinous crimes against women. Clad with placards around their necks, the protestors passionately called for stringent punishment for those involved in the atrocities against women.

The recent appalling incident in Manipur has sent shockwaves across the entire nation. The women in Silchar, however, made it clear that such atrocities are not limited to one region and recounted the tragic murder of an innocent girl that recently occurred in their own city. With a firm belief in upholding the rule of law, the protestors advocated that no one should be allowed to take matters into their own hands.

Speaking to reporters, retired ACS officer Madhumita Choudhury stated, “The entire country has been shaken by the shameful incident that took place in Manipur. But not only in Manipur, atrocities against women and children are taking place in India, including Silchar. The murder of an innocent girl in Silchar took place recently. No one should take the law into their own hands. After many days, so many women have gathered from different walks of life to join in this protest. The perpetrators should be punished, and the punishment should also become viral just like the atrocities.”

The sit-in protest captured the attention of passersby and garnered support from various sections of society. The women’s determination to seek justice and peace resonated throughout the gathering, emphasizing the urgent need for swift action against those responsible for crimes against women.
