GC College Principal joins ABVP as Teachers’ Membership Drive gains traction, CM clarifies it is not a students’ organisation of BJP
In a strategic move to expand its influence, the Assam Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has launched a “Teachers’ Membership Drive” campaign, aimed at enrolling teachers from various educational institutions. The campaign, which began in Upper Assam, has now reached the Barak Valley, garnering significant attention and participation from the teachers.
The latest development in the campaign saw the Principal of Gurucharan College, Bibhas Deb, officially become a part of the ABVP yesterday. Principal Deb was presented with a membership card by student leaders of ABVP at his office. The photographs of the event were later shared on the official social media handles of Assam ABVP, with the caption, “The Principal of Gurucharan College, Shri Bibhas Deb and Asst. Professor of Chemistry Dept. Shri Saikatendu Deb Roy enthusiastically participated in the Teachers’ Membership Drive of ABVP by taking the membership of the organisation.”
Principal Deb’s affiliation with ABVP stirred up controversy in political circles. When questioned about the social media posts confirming his membership, he explained, “Members of ABVP had come to see me. They had certain demands. I heard them and then they requested for a picture and we clicked a photograph. This is all that happened in my cabin.”
However, when pressed for further clarification about his enrollment in ABVP, Principal Deb clarified, “Joining ABVP or not joining ABVP is a different matter altogether. Coming back to what happened during the meeting, the students associated with ABVP had come to meet me with their demands. I met them, discussed their demands and agreed to fulfil some of them. They asked for a photograph and we clicked one, that is it.”
Meanwhile, the political upheaval and controversy in Assam over teachers joining ABVP prompted the Chief Minister to step in and address the situation. He clarified, “ABVP is not a students’ organisation of BJP. It is a social organisation and there is no constitutional constraint to join it.”
As the “Teachers’ Membership Drive” continues to gain traction and teachers from various institutions align themselves with ABVP, the campaign’s impact on the educational and political landscape of Assam remains to be seen.
