Traffic comes to a halt on Silchar-Guwahati National Highway No. 6 due to rain, Potholes resemble ponds
The Silchar-Guwahati National Highway No. 6, often monikered as the lifeline of Barak Valley, has once again come to a grinding halt due to heavy rainfall. Traffic along this crucial route has been disrupted for the past 8 hours, particularly along the Meghalaya border at Digorkhal, Kalaincherra, and Lakkhicherra, where enormous potholes have formed, akin to the size or resemblance of ponds. This has left thousands of vehicles stranded, including ambulances, resulting in a major breakdown in communication between the capital city of Assam and Barak Valley.
Passengers and drivers caught in this standstill are enduring a nightmarish ordeal, aggravated by what they perceive as administrative apathy. The bureaucratic indifference has only intensified the suffering of the stranded commuters.
It is worth noting that National Highway 6, connecting Silchar to Shillong, has been in a deteriorating condition for a long period, forcing travellers to risk their lives while embarking on journeys to Guwahati. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rainfall has compounded the situation, adding to the hardships faced by travelers from Barak Valley.
Local authorities and concerned agencies were repeatedly urged to take immediate action for repairing the damaged sections of the highway and ensure the safety and convenience of the commuters, however all the pleas fell on deaf ears. The resumption of smooth traffic flow on this vital route is crucial not only for the residents of Barak Valley but also for the overall connectivity of the region.
