Death of a Newborn at Mediland Sparks Debate on Hospital’s Alleged Negligence
In a devastating turn of events, Ambiya Begum from the Panchgram area faced the unimaginable loss of her newborn at Mediland Hospital in Silchar. The family alleges negligence on the part of Dr. Tilak Upadhay, the attending doctor, and the private hospital.
Dr. Upadhay contends that the situation was unfortunate but denies any negligence, emphasizing the importance of their work at the private hospital. The family desired a natural birth, and the doctor agreed, planning for a normal delivery unless complications arose, warranting a C-Section.
The family claims that when they sensed a problem with Ambiya at night, they sought the doctor’s assistance, but he did not appear despite assurances. Dr. Upadhay, on the other hand, asserts his commitment to the patient, highlighting that he had successfully delivered two of Ambiya’s previous children naturally.
According to the doctor, Ambiya’s expected delivery date was January 1st, and on December 24th, her husband contacted him about contractions. They agreed to come to the hospital, and Dr. Upadhay welcomed the decision. However, he clarified that if there was no progress by morning, a C-Section would be necessary.
In the morning, the doctor performed the C-Section, but the baby did not respond. Despite their efforts, the newborn did not survive. The family believes the doctor’s delayed response contributed to the tragedy.
The family further alleges that nurses made excuses to prevent them from seeing the baby after delivery. When the husband, Dilwar Hussain, finally saw the baby, it was in a box, lifeless.
The grief-stricken family now seeks justice, expressing their intent to approach the Health Minister or even the Chief Minister if necessary. They aim to bring attention to the alleged negligence of Dr. Upadhay and the hospital, believing they have been wronged. Tensions escalated within the hospital, requiring police intervention to maintain order.
