Last-Minute Exam Notice Ignites Student Uprising at Assam University; Postponed to Feb
In an unexpected turn of events, the Triguna Sen School of Technology students at Assam University took to the gates on Monday, January 8th, to voice their grievances against a series of issues that have ignited discontent among the student body. The protest, which saw students from various backgrounds united in their cause, outlined four key demands that reflect the deep-seated concerns within the university.
The students first raised their voices against the abrupt notification of exams merely three days prior to the scheduled date. Citing UGC guidelines that recommend a seven-day notice, the protesters argued that the university’s failure to adhere to this standard had left them unprepared and disadvantaged.
Another critical concern that echoed through the crowd was the stringent attendance policy set at 75%. The students having kess than 75% attendence are reportedly barred from giving exams and the students with genuine health reasons, were also not permitted to take their exams if their attendance fell below 60% threshold. The students emphasized the need for a more flexible approach, especially considering medical urgencies.
One of the protest leaders shed light on the pressing issue of placements within the department. The students revealed that the preceding year had seen a disheartening zero placement record. They demanded concrete steps to rectify this and provide genuine opportunities for career advancement.
The third demand brought attention to the lack of transparency in the evaluation process. Students expressed their frustration with not being allowed to review their exam papers, suspecting discrepancies in the marking. The protesters called for a change in the system, urging the university to allow them to assess their performance and understand the grading process.
In a partial victory for the students, the university agreed to postpone the exams to February, providing some relief to those who were caught off guard by the short notice. However, the protesters remain steadfast in their stance, emphasizing that their remaining demands are yet to be addressed.
This protest is not an isolated incident for Assam University, as it has witnessed numerous student agitations in the past. The outcome of this collective stand remains uncertain, but the students are resolute in their pursuit of fair treatment, transparency, and an academic environment that supports their aspirations. The university administration now faces the challenge of reconciling with the student body and finding lasting solutions to the raised concerns.
