All India Trinamool Congress announces Sushmita Dev’s candidature to Rajya Sabha, “Wasn’t expecting,” reacts former Silchar MP

Today, All India Trinamool Congress announced the candidature of four members for the Rajya Sabha elections. One of the four happened to be Silchar’s Sushmita Dev. “We extend our heartfelt wishes to them and may they work towards upholding Trinamool’s enduring legacy of indomitable spirit and advocacy for the rights of every Indian,” shared the official handle of the AITMC.

“I would like to thank our leader and the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee for bestowing her trust on me again. I would also like to express my gratitude towards the All India Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee,” reacted former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev after her candidature for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections was announced by the party.

“This is probably for the first time, someone from the Northeast has been given this opportunity to be a member of the Rajya Sabha from outside and that too twice. In a way, this is Mamata Banerjee’s way of giving it back to the people of the Northeast India. Also, three out of the four candidatures have been bestowed to women which makes Mamata Banerjee a true ambassador of the Women Empowerment in Indian Politics,” asserted Dev while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

Dev added that she will be available for the people of Silchar, “Yes, I am now being involved in Bengal politics but Silchar elected me as an MP in the past and I will forever remain available for the people of Silchar,” she added.

When asked about her involvement in the General Elections to the Lok Sabha, Dev said that this is something that will be decided by Mamata Banerjee and the party leadership. She hinted there is a meeting scheduled involving the State President, Ripun Bora and things will get clear in that meeting. “I wasn’t expecting to be sent to Rajya Sabha and now that this has happened, I will go to Kolkata and figure out the new dynamics. I will play the role that the party plans for me,” concluded Dev.
