Social Media Me Too Movement Surges Against Silchar Doctor; Cachar SP Assures Action As Per Law

In the wake of a burgeoning outcry on social media, accusations against Dr. Himabrata Das, a psychiatrist at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), have escalated, with over 100 individuals alleging instances of impropriety. The accusations, primarily concerning inappropriate messaging, objectification, and solicitation for marriage, have sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.

Screenshots shared on public platforms by victims reveal a pattern of behavior where Dr. Das commented on the appearance of young women, objectifying them and luring them into relationships. Those who did not respond faced derogatory remarks about their education level. Shockingly, the allegations span a significant period, with victims recounting persistent harassment.

One victim, aged 19, recounted a distressing experience with Dr. Das, echoing the sentiments of many others who have come forward. “Not just texts, he has been calling us on messenger too, and then he tells us life has been difficult since his divorce, and so we need to understand his situation,” shared one victim.

Another victim described the stark contrast between Dr. Das’s public persona and his alleged misconduct in private interactions. “During the day, he is with the intellectual fraternity, clicking pictures with the vice-chancellor of the University, doing commentary on cricket matches, sharing his achievements in the complex and competitive field of medical sciences,” she explained. “So, it is obvious for people like us irrespective of gender to call him dada and respect him. So, when he initiates a conversation, the natural instinct is not to suspect him as a pervert. But after a couple of messages, he just reveals himself as this animal who understands nothing apart from outraging the modesty of women.”

Legal experts have weighed in, asserting that Dr. Das’s actions constitute criminal behavior under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with assault or the use of criminal force against women with the intent to outrage their modesty.

The mounting allegations and public outcry, have attracted the attention of the Cachar Police. If Police sources are to be believed, Sub-inspectors in various Police Stations of Cachar have been establishing contact with the victims who have come out on social platforms.

Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, speaking with Barak Bulletin, assured the that once a formal complaint is received, appropriate measures will be taken as per the law.

Dr. Das, however, is yet to issue a public statement on the chain of events surrounding his conduct. His close aides have informed Barak Bulletin that the family is in shock and figuring out how to react to the situation.
