Fishermen Rescue Silchar Woman from Drowning in Barak After Being Swept Away During Worship at Siddheshwar Temple
In a dramatic turn of events, a woman was rescued from the Barak River after being swept away while performing a ritual Ganga Puja at Siddheshwar Temple in Badarpur Ghat. The woman, identified as Oli Rani Dey, was found nearly 5 kilometres downstream by local fishermen and is currently being treated at a nearby hospital.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when Dey visited the Siddheshwar Temple for worship. After completing her prayers, she proceeded to the temple’s ghat to perform Ganga Puja. During the ritual, the strong current of the Barak River overpowered her, causing her to be carried away by the flow.
Fishermen in Katigorah’s Rajatilla village noticed a hand waving from beneath the water while fishing in the river. Reacting swiftly, they used a fishing net to rescue Dey. Rupak Das, one of the fishermen involved in the rescue, recounted the harrowing experience.
“We were fishing in the river when we saw someone’s hands beating the water a little distance away. I went with my boat and managed to fish her out of the water. She had swallowed a lot of water, and we had to press her stomach to expel some of it. She regained partial consciousness but couldn’t speak coherently. With the help of other locals, we rushed her to the nearest hospital,” said Das.
Dey, who resides in a rented house in Das Colony, Silchar, was found in a state of shock and trauma. She could only manage to speak in puzzled statements after the incident. According to sources, she mentioned that while worshipping the river, the strong current caught her off guard and swept her away.
