Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dismisses Six Casual Workers Over Alleged Financial Misconduct
Six casual workers from the Central Laboratory of Silchar Medical College and Hospital have been dismissed following proven allegations of financial misconduct. The dismissal order was issued on 17 July by the hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Deb Kumar Chakraborty. Additionally, three employees from the Radiology Department have been transferred as a punitive measure.
Dr. Chakraborty revealed that financial irregularities in the Central Laboratory had been reported just two months after he assumed his responsibilities at the hospital nine months ago. Due to the escalating situation, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Hrituraj Thakuria was assigned to investigate the matter. Based on his report, the six casual workers—Muzibur Rahman, Mazhar Bhuiya, Paulang Rongmai, Brahmananda Karmi, Saumen Ghosh, Aziz Sheikh, and Rasu Chandra Das—were suspended.
The superintendent stated that the laboratory’s management had reached a point where multiple tests were conducted for other labs in exchange for a single barcode. In response, three employees from the Radiology Department were already transferred, and a committee has been formed to investigate irregularities within the department.
Dr. Chakraborty emphasised the hospital’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, asserting that the medical authorities are committed to transparent administration. He assured that no form of corruption would be tolerated in the future.
However, the Casual Workers’ Association has labelled the hospital’s decision as unethical. They argue that the dismissal of casual workers is an attempt by the medical authorities to cover up their corruption, describing it as an effort to hide their own misdeeds.
