Sexual Assault Case: Cachar Police Detains Assam University Professor
A professor from Silchar Assam University has been detained on charges of sexually harassing a student. Biswajit Das, a professor in the University’s Law Department, was detained following a strong protest by the students.
They alleged that the incident of sexual harassment occurred two days ago in the Law Department of Assam University in Silchar. Professor Biswajit Das allegedly sexually harassed a 6th-semester BA.LLB student. Initially, the victim filed a complaint with the university authorities and later lodged a complaint at the University Police station.
However, according to them, no action was taken, prompting the students to stage a protest today. From the morning, students held a massive protest in front of the main gate of the university. The President of the student’s Union, Subom Roy also said that these kind of incidents had already occurred before in the same campus but no strict actions were taken but now considering the case of West Bengal, which took place a few days back, regarding the rape of a 23-year old doctor, the President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary and the overall students union are strongly urging to take serious action as much as they can.
Currently, the detained professor, Biswajit Das is being interrogated and sources indicated, he is likely to be arrested.
