“Let Justice Prevail but never delayed” states CM Himanta Biswa Sarma at 150th Anniversary of Bar Association

Today, at the 150th anniversary celebration of the Cachar District Bar Association, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the pressing issue of public distrust in the Indian judiciary. The event, which also saw the presence of Justice Kalyan Kumar Surana of the Guwahati High Court, served as a platform for Sarma to call for more timely justice, especially in cases involving severe crimes such as rape and molestation.

Sarma pointed out that the general public has lost faith in the judicial system due to the frequent delays in justice, which often allows perpetrators to escape immediate punishment and return to society. This erosion of trust has led to a situation where people are increasingly demanding instant justice through political interventions, rather than relying on the traditional judicial process.

The Chief Minister highlighted the need for lawyers to expedite cases involving serious crimes. He urged them to ensure that verdicts are delivered promptly and that any guilty parties are punished without delay. Sarma stressed, “Let justice prevail, but let us not delay justice,” and called on legal professionals to contribute to a more efficient legal process.

During his speech, Sarma also referenced the brutal rape and murder of Tilottama at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for immediate justice. He highlighted how such incidents contribute to the public’s frustration with the judicial system and their demand for quicker responses from authorities.

In his address, Sarma emphasised that the growing practice of mob violence is a dangerous trend linked to the public’s lack of trust in the judiciary. He called on all stakeholders, including legal practitioners and the public, to work together to restore confidence in the legal system by ensuring timely and fair justice.
