Following the annual norm, this year too, the National Sports Day was celebrated in Barak Valley with great enthusiasm and events organised under the management of the Barak Upatyaka Krida Sangbadik Sangstha (BUKSS). The Cachar district committee of BUKSS took the lead in organising a day filled with activities to honour the spirit of sports. In a friendly football match organised this afternoon, Barak Bulletin’s Ahadul Ahmed stole the show.
The day began on a respectful note at the District Sports Association (DSA) central office, where officials paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary “Magician of Hockey.” His portrait was adorned with a garland, honouring his immense contribution to Indian hockey and his unparalleled sportsmanship.
In the afternoon, the festivities continued with a friendly football match at the Town Club ground, held in memory of Saroj Nalini Nandi Purkayastha. The match saw spirited participation from journalists representing both electronic and print media. The match was held between two teams, one with journalists from the print and the other team of digital media as their opponents. In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, the electronic media team emerged victorious, defeating the print media team with a convincing score of 4-1. Ahadul Ahmed of the electronic media stole the show, scoring three of the four goals for his team and earning the title of “Man of the Match.”
The event was graced by the presence of several prominent figures, including Babul Hore, the former President of the District Sports Association (DSA); Dilip Nandi, President of Town Club; and Mrinal Kanti Roy, a former FIFA referee. Other notable attendees included Sujan Dutta, Mridul Majumdar, Ratan Deb (Central President of BUKSS), Debashis Shome (Cachar district president), Ravi Hajam (Central Secretary), Abhijit Bhattacharya (Cachar Secretary), and Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, the event sponsor. The gathering also included former footballers Baharul Islam Laskar and Bikash Das, who added to the event’s significance with their presence.

The event not only paid homage to one of India’s greatest sports icons but also fostered camaraderie among the media community, reinforcing the spirit of sportsmanship.
