Katigorah Police Arrests Congress Leader in Connection with Smuggling ₹19 Lakh Worth Iron Rod Headed to Aizwal
Taj Uddin Majumdar, Congress leader and Chairman of the Jaynagar-Jatrapur Cooperative Society, was arrested by the Katigorah Police on Wednesday night for his alleged involvement in a major iron rod theft case. The case pertains to a truck carrying iron rods worth ₹19 lakh that went missing while en route from Guwahati to Aizawl. The transport company, based in Guwahati, had filed a complaint on August 25, after losing contact with the driver, suspecting foul play.
The investigation, which began shortly after the complaint, led to the arrest of two individuals, Farooq Ahmed and Rajib Uddin, on August 30. The stolen iron rods and the truck, with altered registration plates, were recovered during the initial police action.
Following their confessions, police raided Majumdar’s residence in Jaynagar-Jatingamukh and arrested him. It is alleged that the stolen iron rods were smuggled from a petrol pump owned by Majumdar, further implicating him in the theft operation.
Majumdar was presented before the Silchar District and Sessions Court on Thursday, September 12, for further proceedings. The police suspect that this theft may be part of a larger racket, with investigations ongoing to uncover more connections.
Earlier in the investigation, it was revealed that the truck driver, Farooq Ahmed Talukdar, who also owned the truck, had been in regular contact with the transport company until August 23. The driver claimed to have reached Kolasib in Mizoram but soon after turned off his phone, arousing suspicion. The truck was later found, with the number plate altered to conceal the crime.
