Ex-BJP Leader Amiya Kanti Das Submits Independent Nomination for Dholai, Against BJP & Congress

Following the selection of Nihar Ranjan Das as the BJP candidate for Dholai in the upcoming by-election, a wave of dissent erupted within the party. This led to the resignation of long-time BJP member and Vice-President of the Cachar District BJP, Amiya Kanti Das, along with 500 others. On 24 October, Amiya Kanti Das submitted his nomination as an independent candidate, adding a new dimension to the political landscape of Dholai.

In a dramatic turn of events, Amiya Kanti Das, disillusioned with the BJP’s leadership and selection process, decided to contest independently. After his resignation, he accused Nihar Ranjan Das, the BJP’s chosen candidate, of being a “puppet” for MP Parimal Suklabaidya. During a meeting held shortly after his departure from the party, Das alleged that Suklabaidya handpicked Nihar for the candidacy to serve his own interests rather than the constituency’s welfare. This accusation has further widened the rift within the local BJP unit, with many former party workers rallying behind Amiya Kanti Das in support of his independent bid.

Das officially filed his nomination papers at the Cachar District Administration Office, accompanied by a group of loyal supporters. In his statement to the press, Das expressed confidence in his chances, he expressed that he is 100 percent hopeful that he would be victorious in the upcoming by-election. In an earlier meeting, he expressed that only a candidate that is rooted to the region can bring development, and that’s why he wishes to nominate himself.

This isn’t the only political turmoil Dholai has faced recently. The Congress party has also been rocked by internal conflict. Just days ago, 12 Congress members from Dholai resigned, accusing their candidate, Dhrubojyoti Purkayastha, of having close ties with the BJP, specifically with MP Parimal Suklabaidya. The resigning Congress leaders branded Purkayastha as a “BJP-marked candidate,” claiming that he was strategically chosen to make it easier for the BJP to win.

Amiya Kanti Das’s independent candidacy adds yet another twist to an already volatile political atmosphere. His decision to break away from the BJP and contest as an independent highlights the growing dissatisfaction among grassroots leaders with the current political dynamics. The Dholai by-election, already marked by infighting and controversy, now appears to be a contest between party loyalists and those advocating for a new direction.
