“No abduction in Cachar” clarifies Cachar Police’ Denying Kuki Inpi’s Claim
The Kuki Inpi has claimed that two villagers from Manipur’s Tamenglong district were abducted from Assam’s Jirighat area by Meitei militants, with one later found brutally murdered. However, Cachar Police strongly denies these allegations, stating no such incident occurred in Assam and urging people to refrain from spreading unverified information.
The Department of Information & Publicity, Kuki Inpi Jiribam, Tamenglong & Noney has alleged that two individuals from Pangmol Village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district were abducted by members of the Arambai Tenggol and Meitei militants from Jirighat, Assam. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Kuki Inpi expressed shock over the incident and called for urgent intervention by the Central Government.
The two individuals in question are HaoJoel Doungel (27) and Thangjangul Doungel (30). According to the Kuki Inpi, HaoJoel’s dead body was recovered in Aglapur Village, Jiribam, with visible signs of brutal torture. His hands and mouth were reportedly tied, and his body was allegedly dumped in a culvert. Meanwhile, Thangjangul’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The Kuki Inpi has urged the Cachar District Administration and Police to maintain vigilance to prevent further disturbances in the region. They have also appealed to ensure the safety of civilians from Manipur who have sought shelter in Cachar due to ongoing violence in Manipur.
The Cachar Police, however, denied the allegations, terming them “incorrect, misleading, and rumoured information.” In a statement, the police clarified that no abduction had taken place in Jirighat or any part of Cachar district.
“Both individuals are residents of Tamenglong district in Manipur, and the dead body of HaoJoel Doungel was found in Jiribam, Manipur. Cachar district had no involvement in the incident,” the statement said. The police further appealed to all to refrain from spreading unverified claims that could fuel tensions.
The allegations come amidst rising tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities following violent incidents in Manipur. Last week, clashes between the Police, and alleged Kuki militants, escalated the conflict.
Additionally, the abduction of six Meitei women and children, five of whom were later found dead, has exacerbated the situation. The Meitei community has blamed Kuki militants for the deaths of the abducted women and children, while the Kuki Inpi now accuses Meitei groups of abducting and killing members of their community.
The situation remains fragile, with accusations and counter-accusations creating unrest in both Manipur and neighbouring Assam. Local authorities, including Cachar Police, are striving to maintain peace in Silchar and surrounding areas. Citizens are urged to verify information before sharing to avoid further conflict.
