Manipur Violence: “Peace in Cachar our top priority,” Says Cachar SP Amid Midnight Border Patrol

Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta, accompanied by Additional SP Subrat Sen and other officials from the district headquarters, conducted a midnight patrol at Jirighat to inspect the interstate border.

Following the recent outbreak of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, which shares a border with Assam’s Cachar district, Silchar has been in the spotlight. The bodies of those killed in the conflict have been brought to Silchar, and displaced individuals from neighbouring areas are seeking refuge with relatives on Assam’s side of the border.

In Cachar, the Hmar and Meitei communities coexist peacefully who are at loggerheads in the ethnic clashes on the other side of the interstate border. SP Mahatta emphasised that the ethnic clashes in Manipur must not affect the law and order situation in Cachar.

“We have deployed police personnel and commandos for patrolling the bordering areas. Our primary concern is to prevent anti-social elements with disruptive agendas from entering the district. Peace and tranquillity within Cachar are our top priorities, and we are working round the clock to ensure this,” SP Mahatta told Barak Bulletin.

He added, “Officially, we have not received reports of any relief camps being set up yet. However, we have held meetings with village committees and local organisations, instructing them to alert the administration about any migration or settlement of residents from the neighbouring state.”

Issuing a stern warning, SP Mahatta said, “We want to make it very clear: if any individual or group attempts to disturb the peaceful coexistence in any way, we will take strict action.”
