Big Breaking: “Karimganj Renamed As Sribhoomi District,” Himanta Biswa Sarma After Cabinet Meeting
The Assam cabinet has officially approved the proposal to rename Karimganj district as Sribhoomi distict on November 19, 2024. This decision was taken today in a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. This decision, the Chief Minister said, came after careful consideration of the historical roots of this town in Assam and restoring the old glory to this name used by Rabindranath Tagore in his writings.
Speaking at the press meet following the cabinet meeting, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We have thinking about renaming the names of places, villages, towns and districts of Assam into modern Assamese names which doesn’t have communal angle. There are many districts which have deep historical connotations but that is reflected in their names. Just like we renamed the name of Kalapahar, in that discipline, we have renamed Karimganj district as ‘Sribhumi’ district”.
“Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern-day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi”, explaining the reason, Sarma wrote on X (Twitter). “Honouring the vision of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore who named the current geographical of Undivided India as Sribhumi, Assam Cabinet has decided to rename Karimganj as Sribhumi district. This decision will reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district”, the tweet further read.
Expressing his gratitude to the CM over the change in this name, Krishnendu Paul, MLA Patherkandi wrote, “This thoughtful move not only honours the rich cultural heritage and traditions of our region but also instils a sense of pride among its people. The name “Shreebhoomi” resonates deeply with our cultural ethos, reflecting the spiritual and historical significance of our land. This decision will undoubtedly strengthen the identity of our district and inspire future generations to preserve and celebrate our legacy”.
