Cachar’s Joypur Shines Bright at National Thang-Ta Championship
Thang-Ta, the ancient martial art from Manipur involving swords and spears, has made a strong impression at the 30th National Thang-Ta Championship in Uttarakhand, and Assam’s performance at the event has been particularly remarkable. The state secured a total of 22 medals, including 8 gold, 6 silver, and 8 bronze, with Cachar’s Joypur emerging as a major contributor to this success. The competition was held on January 4 to 6 this year.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, members of the Joypur Thang-Ta Association shared that over 600 players from 22 states, including Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Delhi, and Haryana, participated in this national-level competition. Assam was represented by 28 players.
Along with honouring the medal-winning players from Cachar, the Joypur Thang-Ta Association also organised a colourful procession on Saturday to celebrate their achievements at the 30th National Thang-Ta Championship hosted by the Uttarakhand Thang-Ta Association. The players were felicitated at Silchar Sadarghat, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the area.
In an outstanding display of skill and dedication, players from Joypur area in Lakhipur, Cachar, clinched 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal, making them the pride of Assam. This achievement stands out not only for the exceptional performance of these athletes but also for highlighting the growing prominence of Thang-Ta in the region. Their success has helped raise the profile of the sport in Assam and showcase the state’s talent on the national stage.
This success marks a milestone for Cachar’s Joypur, which has now become a hub for promoting Thang-Ta in Assam. The village community expressed hope that the athletes would continue to excel and bring further pride to the state, with expectations for even greater achievements at both national and international levels.
