Sushmita Dev Slams BJP Over Delay in Silchar Municipal Elections: Compares Silchar with Dibrugarh

Rajya Sabha MP, Sushmita Dev from Trinamool Congress, has criticised the Assam government for its treatment of Silchar’s Municipal Corporation status, highlighting the unfair delay in elections when compared to Dibrugarh.

On Tuesday, Sushmita Dev, Rajya Sabha MP from Trinamool Congress, expressed her disapproval of the BJP-led Assam government over its handling of Silchar’s Municipal Corporation status. In a media interaction, Dev pointed out that both Silchar and Dibrugarh were announced to become Municipal Corporations at the same time, but Dibrugarh has already had its Municipal Board elections and a Mayor, while Silchar is still waiting.

She referred to a recent statement made by Dibrugarh’s first mayor, Dr. Patra, and described the stark contrast between Dibrugarh and Silchar. She said it lies in how each town’s Municipal Board was handled. In Dibrugarh, the Municipal Board was first run by elected members, and then the board was smoothly converted into a Municipal Corporation without the need for another election.

In contrast, Silchar’s board has not been functioning through elected representatives for years. Now, the board is set to become a corporation only after holding an election. While Dibrugarh was granted its corporation status without waiting for a fresh election, Silchar still faces delays. The TMC MP expressed frustration over the fact that Silchar has had to wait so long for its Municipal Corporation elections.

“The Assam BJP government has failed to conduct proper elections for Silchar, leaving the Municipal Board without elected representatives for years,” she said. Dev also criticised the BJP for allowing the municipality to be controlled by contractors instead of locally elected officials, accusing them of using the Municipal Board for business deals rather than public service.

The Trinamool Congress MP further called out BJP for failing to fulfil its promises and for leaving the people of Silchar without any representation. Dev concluded by urging the people of Silchar to carefully consider their voting choices in the upcoming elections. She called on them to think critically about the government’s track record and make an informed decision when they head to the polls.
