Class 7 student attacked with paper cutter by headmaster in Banskandi MV School
In a shocking incident amid the ongoing Gunotsav programme, a Class 7 student of Banskandi MV School in Cachar was allegedly attacked with a paper cutter by the school’s headmaster, leaving him critically injured. The incident took place on Thursday (February 6) at the school under the Lakhipur education block. 9 stitches have been required to close the wounded wrist.
With Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu visiting visiting the district as part of Gunotsav, whether this incident will catch his attention and prompt action remains to be seen.
The victim, identified as Sahid Ahmed, suffered severe wrist injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. According to reports, while Gunotsav evaluations were underway, headmaster Badar Uddin Mazumdar allegedly attacked the student with a paper cutter. Witnesses claim that the headmaster placed the blade near the boy’s throat and, in an attempt to protect himself, the student sustained deep cuts on his wrist.
Following the attack, Sahid’s family rushed him to the hospital in a critical condition. The police, upon receiving information, arrived at the school and detained the accused headmaster. He was taken to Banskandi police station, where the victim’s father lodged a complaint against him.
“We were playing among friends, and sir (headmaster Badar Uddin Mazumdar) came and put a cutter blade to his (Sahid Ahmed) throat and warned that he would behead him. Fearing this, he tried to defend using his hand and his wrist got slit, we could even see the veins because of the deep cut”, one of the victim’s classmates told Barak Bulletin.
However, Mazumdar denied the allegations, claiming that he was merely intervening in a fight between students and that the injury occurred accidentally when the student moved his hand. He stated that he had the cutter to open the seal of question paper envelopes and that he even took the injured student to a pharmacy for first aid.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Cachar, especially as Education Minister Ranoj Pegu is in the district inspecting schools as part of Gunotsav. Banskandi M.V. School, established in 1904, has now come under scrutiny following the shocking event.
Meanwhile, sources reveal that a group of middlemen are allegedly attempting to suppress the case by offering money and using intimidation tactics against the victim’s family. There are also previous allegations of sexual harassment against minor students by the same headmaster, further intensifying the controversy surrounding the case.
Banskandi police have arrested Mazumdar based on the complaint, and further investigations are underway.
