“Husband Started Torturing Me After I Decided to Contest Election,” Silchar Woman Lodges FIR
In the democracy that is India, one woman’s determination to contest an election has allegedly forced her to file an FIR against her husband. The 28-year-old homemaker, Asmita Biswas, claims that her husband was strictly against her decision to contest the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation elections and subjected her to abuse for pursuing her political ambition.
Asmita, a resident of Shantipara in Rongpur, filed a complaint at Rongpur police station on Sunday (February 9), alleging both physical and mental torture at the hands of her husband, Rajesh Biswas, and his family. According to her complaint, she had expressed her intention to contest as an Asom Gana Parishad candidate from Ward No. 4, but her husband objected. When she refused to withdraw, the alleged abuse escalated.
Speaking to the media, Asmita said, “I want to contest from Ward No. 4 as an AGP candidate, but my husband is against it. He started torturing me mentally and physically. When I didn’t back down, he falsely accused me of having an extramarital affair to malign my image. My in-laws also joined in. They even locked me in a room and snatched my phone. Left with no choice, I escaped and filed a complaint.”
The FIR, lodged on Sunday, names Rajesh Biswas, his brother Piklu Roy, and sisters Pinki Roy Mallick, Pompy Roy, and Mitali Choudhury. The police have begun an investigation into the matter.
