Shattering Stereotypes: Katigorah Family Celebrates Birth of Girl Child After 40 Years
A family in Katigorah, Cachar, went all out to celebrate the birth of a girl child after four decades, decorating a vehicle with flowers to bring the mother and newborn home in style. The rare and joyous occasion took place at MG Model Hospital in Katigorah two days back, where Jumara Begum of Katigorah Part III village gave birth to a baby girl.
For the past 40 years, only sons had been born in the family, making this long-awaited arrival an emotional moment. The newborn’s father, Javed Ahmed Laskar, expressed his overwhelming happiness, saying, “Please do dua and give blessings for my daughter. I am so happy today because we have a girl child in our home after 40-42 years. No woman should be tortured, and the birth of a female brings joy to the family.”
The couple has named their daughter Inayat Laskar, with “Inayat” meaning kindness or favour. To mark the occasion, family members decorated a vehicle and brought the mother and child home with a grand welcome.
A relative highlighted the significance of the celebration, stating, “80 to 90 per cent of people do not treat girls with respect, but women should be valued. The birth of a daughter is a joy not just for the family but for society as a whole. This might be the first time in our area that a girl child has been welcomed with such grandeur. I also have a daughter, and my life has changed for the better since her birth.”
The rare event has sparked conversations on the importance of valuing daughters, with many praising the family for breaking stereotypes and celebrating the birth of a girl with such enthusiasm.
