12 Robbers Including One Woman Apprehended In Silchar, Gold Worth Rs. 4 Lakh Recovered

In a significant breakthrough, Cachar Police apprehended 11 thieves, including a woman, from the Sadarghat area of Silchar on the night of April 23. The arrests were made following a covert operation based on secret intelligence inputs, police sources confirmed.

Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, said the crackdown was launched after numerous complaints of increasing thefts in various localities of Silchar. “There have been several reports of robbery in Silchar. We launched a crackdown last evening and apprehended 11 robbers in this connection,” said SP Mahatta.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sagar Das, Kabir Hussain, Nirod Das, Raju Saha, Ruby Laskar, Saif Ali, Abdul Laskar, Sanjay Singh, Omkar Mali, and Dibyendu Roy. While two of the accused have been sent to jail, the remaining nine are currently being interrogated.

Police recovered stolen gold ornaments worth approximately Rs. 4 lakh, drill machines, LED television sets, copper utensils, LPG cylinder, several two-wheeler helmets, and a hand-pulled cart (thela) from the accused. According to the police, the robbers would stash the stolen items under a culvert near Sadarghat Bridge before further distribution.

SP Mahatta revealed that the stolen gold was melted down by a local goldsmith, who has also been arrested. “The robbers have confessed that the gold ornaments were being melted and then sold. We have recovered the solid gold and arrested the goldsmith as well,” he said, adding that the crackdown is expected to curb the rising robbery cases in the region.

The accused reportedly hail from various parts of the district including Dholai, with some also from outside Cachar and even from Dhubri district. Investigations are ongoing to trace more individuals linked to the criminal network.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the people of this district. All arrested individuals will be produced before the court and we will seek the harshest punishment as per the law,” SP Mahatta stated.
