Panchayat Elections: BJP Clinches Majority in Cachar Zilla Parishad, Congress Bags 7 Seats, 2 Independents Win

After a marathon counting session that lasted over 24 hours, the results of the Panchayat Election held on May 2 in Cachar district were declared today, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the clear winner in the Zilla Parishad segment by securing 16 out of 25 seats.

Counting began on Sunday at 9 am, delayed by an hour due to incessant rainfall. Despite a few minor brawls, the process concluded smoothly around 9 am on Monday under tight security arrangements. A total of 2,000 polling officials and an equal number of security personnel were deployed to ensure a peaceful counting process. Ballot papers were counted for three tiers — Member, Anchalik Panchayat, and Zilla Parishad — contributing to the extended duration.

Of the 25 Zilla Parishad seats, the BJP had already secured two seats in Lakhipur uncontested ahead of the election. The party went on to win 14 more, making its final tally 16. Congress managed to win 7 seats while Independent candidates clinched victory in two constituencies.

There were 1706 Polling Stations in the district for 1620 GP members, 162 AP members, and 25 ZP members seats.
