Cachar District Court sentences 60-Year-Old Man to 10 Years In Jail for Rape

The District and Sessions Court of Cachar on Monday (May 26) sentenced a 60-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in an year old rape case. The convict, Matab Uddin Laskar, a resident of Ward No. 10 in Dhanipur under Sonai Police Station, was also fined Rs. 5,000 by the court of Judge Biprajit Roy.

The incident took place on May 7, 2024. As per the prosecution, the survivor, a woman from the Dhanehori area, had gone to a nearby shop around 7 PM to purchase household items. On her way back, Laskar allegedly followed her. Taking advantage of a secluded area near a graveyard, he overpowered her, covered her mouth, and dragged her into the graveyard, where he raped her.

A complaint was subsequently lodged at Sonai Police Station, following which a case was registered and an investigation was launched. The police filed a chargesheet, and the matter proceeded to trial.

After hearing the arguments and examining the evidence, the court found Matab Uddin guilty under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and awarded him 10 years of imprisonment. In case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional three months in prison.
