Silchar Doctor Allegedly Amputates Patient’s Genitals Without Consent, FIR Filed
In a disturbing allegation that raises serious questions about medical ethics and negligence, a 27-year-old patient from Jiribam, Manipur, has filed a police complaint against a Silchar-based surgeon, Dr Eden Sinha, accusing him of amputating his entire genitalia without consent or medical justification.
The patient, Atikur Rahman, visited Dr Sinha at RE Hospital in Ghungoor on May 19 for what he described as a minor infection in his urinary tract. Following consultation, he was admitted to the hospital the same evening. Rahman claims all preliminary tests came back normal, but Dr Sinha advised a biopsy, which the patient agreed to.
According to Rahman, the biopsy was scheduled for May 19; however, the histopathology report accessed by the Barak Bulletin indicates that the specimen was only collected on June 24 and received by the lab on June 26, raising serious concerns about the timeline. The final report, issued on June 29, diagnosed “moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, usual type.”
Shockingly, Rahman alleges that Dr Sinha proceeded with a full amputation of his genitalia on the very day of admission, ten days before the biopsy report was even available. He further claims that no consent was taken for the surgery, other than signatures collected from him and his wife without explanation.
“I was told a small sample would be taken, and I’d be discharged the same night,” Rahman told reporters, “Before the biopsy procedure, I was administered anaesthesia, and when I regained consciousness, a catheter had been inserted. After three days, when my bandages were removed, I found my entire private part gone.”
He added that his wife fainted after being shown a graphic image related to the surgery and had to be hospitalised in the ICU for three days.
Following the operation, Rahman alleges that Dr Sinha became unreachable and has not returned his calls. Hospital staff reportedly informed him that the doctor had gone to Mumbai. Rahman also claims that when he finally managed to get in touch with the doctor, he was met with threats.
The patient, who now lives with a permanent catheter and extreme pain, says he has been refused treatment by other doctors who fear complications from “another doctor’s mistake.” As of July 3, the sutures from the May 19 operation allegedly remain uncut.
Rahman’s FIR, lodged on July 1 at Ghungoor Police Outpost, names Dr Eden Sinha—an MS, MBBS General and Laparoscopic Surgeon affiliated with Silchar Medical College and Hospital—as the sole accused. He has appealed to the authorities for immediate investigation and legal action.
“This man has destroyed my life,” Rahman writes in his FIR. “I have a wife and three small children. I am unable to work or even move. Every doctor I approach refuses to treat me. I am terrified I may die.”
When Barak Bulletin reached out to Dr Sinha on July 3 for his comment, his assistant answered the call and said that the doctor was unavailable for any comment on this matter.
The incident has sent shockwaves among the public, especially as Silchar serves as a crucial healthcare hub for patients not only from across the Barak Valley but also from Dima Hasao, Jiribam, and neighbouring areas of Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Lakhs of people rely on Silchar Medical College and the rapidly growing number of private nursing homes in the Meherpur-Ghungoor area. While private medical practice has expanded access to specialised care, it also brings with it serious ethical concerns and, at times, grave allegations of medical malpractice—this case being one of the most alarming in recent memory.
The case is currently under investigation by the Cachar Police.
