Minister Rupesh Gowala Inspects Silchar Central Jail, Assures Action Against Any Illegal Activities Inside

Rupesh Gowala, state Minister of Home Department for jails, on Tuesday (November 4) visited the District Central Jail in Silchar to assess the condition of the cells, healthcare facilities, and the current situation of the inmates, while also engaging in conversations with them. During the inspection, he reviewed the quality of food, the canteen, and the living quarters of the prisoners.

Minister of Home (Prisons, Home Guards and Civil Defence), Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare departments, Rupesh Gowala, accompanied by the District Commissioner of Cachar, Mirdul Yadav and Senior Superintendent of Police, Partha Protim Das. The Minister also held detailed discussions with the prison staff to gain a deeper insight into the various challenges they face. The visit aimed to ensure that the prison is functioning properly and that the prisoners’ basic needs are being met.

Speaking to the media, Minister Gowala said, “As part of my duty, I visited to check how everything’s going on, it’s my department after all. I checked how it’s running and if everything is okay. How the prisoners are doing, looked at these.” He said the visit was part of a routine departmental review.

He further mentioned that the Central Jail in Silchar is scheduled to be shifted to a new location soon. “I am not expecting it to be costly. I am not expecting or seeking too much funding for the current jail. As soon as I get approval from the finance, the work will begin,” Gowala said. However, he did not specify the exact date for the relocation.

The Minister also informed that other officials from the department regularly visit the prison, and an order has been issued for surprise inspections as well. These measures are intended to maintain transparency and ensure smooth functioning.

He urged members of the public and the media to share information with the authorities if they ever come across anything related to the prisons that needs attention. “If any illegal activity is going on, I would look into it,” he assured.
