Locals Allegedly Assault Udarbond Police Team During Operation in Silchar’s Berenga Area

Tension prevailed in Silchar’s Berenga Part III area on Tuesday evening (November 4) after a police team from Udarband was detained by locals while taking two accused persons into custody.

According to sources, the Udarband Police team, led by Investigating Officer Yakub Ali and accompanied by two constables, had gone to Berenga to arrest two individuals accused of purchasing a car through a finance company and later selling it under the pretext of theft.

The officers reportedly managed to detain the accused and were taking them away in a van when locals confronted them, questioning why the operation was being carried out within Silchar Police’s jurisdiction without prior intimation to local authorities. The situation soon escalated as a crowd gathered and detained the Udarband team. In the ensuing chaos, some locals allegedly vandalised the police vehicle.

Upon receiving information, a team from Silchar Sadar Police Station arrived at the spot, rescued the detained Udarband Police personnel, and took them away along with the two apprehended accused.

No injuries were reported during the incident, but the situation created tension in the locality. Police have launched an inquiry into the matter.
