Assam University Conducts Three-Month Brick Mason Training for Rural Youth

Assam University has provided brick mason training to 76 rural artisans under the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Scheme, aiming to strengthen traditional skills and improve livelihood opportunities. The training, conducted in three batches from August to October, included 40 hours of theory and practical lessons each week.

The programme focused on enhancing the skills of artisans, connecting them to wider markets, and supporting their professional development. Key training components included an overview of the scheme, modern techniques of brick manufacturing, self-employment guidance, digital and financial literacy, and marketing and branding. Participants were evaluated by the Sector Skill Council at the end of the programme.

The training was led by Engineer Debananda De Purkayastha of Assam University, coordinated by Dr Aditi Nath and Prof. Debomalya Ghosh, with assistance from Jayojit Bhattacharjee and Dibyajyoti Dey.

A certificate distribution ceremony took place on Thursday at the Premendra Mohan Goswami Meeting Hall. The event was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant. Also present were Ningthoy Sana Singh, District Project Manager of the National Skill Development Corporation, Prof. M. Gangabhusan, NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr Ajita Tiwari, Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, and Dr Joyashri Dey, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Pant congratulated the trainees and said that skill-based education is essential for empowering rural artisans and preserving the country’s traditional professions. He described the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Scheme as a historic step towards creating skilled professionals who can contribute to local development and the national economy.

Trainees shared their experiences, stating that for the first time since Independence, artisans like them are being formally recognised. They said that this support has boosted their confidence and inspired them to improve their livelihood through skill development.
