Man Succumbs to Injuries Days After Assault at a Udharbond Tea Garden, Police Arrest Prime Accused

A man who was critically injured in an assault incident in Nagar, Chandighat Grant, under Udharbond, died while undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Sunday evening (December 28). The deceased has been identified as Nandalal Karmakar (60), son of the late Biswanath Karmakar and a resident of Nagar Tea Garden. He had been battling for life since sustaining grievous injuries in the attack.

Meanwhile, acting on a tip-off, Udharbond Police arrested the prime accused in connection with the case on Saturday evening. The accused has been identified as Jantu Karmakar, son of the late Montu Karmakar and a resident of Nagar Tea Garden. He was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody on Sunday.

According to police sources, the incident took place on December 25, at around 8:30 am, when Jantu Karmakar allegedly attacked Nandalal Karmakar with a sharp weapon at Nagar Tea Garden. After Nandalal collapsed on the ground, the accused allegedly dragged him and dumped him in another section of the tea garden before fleeing the spot.

Locals claimed that the fight allegedly broke out following a drunken brawl, which escalated into a violent assault. However, police said the exact sequence of events is still under investigation.

Nandalal was later noticed by tea garden workers, who rescued him and rushed him to the Udharbond Primary Block Health Centre. As his condition was critical, doctors referred him to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite sustained medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening.
