Jirighat Man Sentenced To Three Years In Ganja Trafficking Case

The Cachar District and Sessions Court on Friday (January 30) convicted a Jirighat resident in a 2019 cannabis (ganja) trafficking case and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment.

The convicted person has been identified as Shantalal Deb (48), alias Shanto, a resident of Kalibari Road, Jirighat in Cachar. He was arrested on January 1, 2019, after police recovered 4 kg of ganja from his possession near the National Highway, close to Jirighat Police Station.

According to the prosecution, around 11:30 am on the day of the incident, Deb was found waiting for a vehicle with a carton, which aroused suspicion among police personnel. A search led to the recovery of ganja concealed inside the carton, following which he was taken into custody.

After completion of investigation, the case was tried in the court of Special Judge Bankim Sharma. Pronouncing the verdict on Friday, the court held Deb guilty under Section 20(b) of the NDPS Act and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000. In default of payment, he will have to undergo an additional three months of imprisonment.

The prosecution was represented by advocate Pradeep Kumar Patowary, while advocate P. Nag appeared for the defence.
