Drugs Worth Rs 14 Crore Seized from Barak River, Manipur Man Arrested
In a major anti-drug operation, Cachar Police and Assam Rifles seized narcotics worth an estimated Rs 14 crore from the Barak river along the Assam–Manipur border and arrested one suspected trafficker from Manipur, Cachar Police said on Friday (February 06).
Acting on specific intelligence, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Cachar Police launched an operation at Tolenagram under Lakhipur in the Cachar district. During a search of a boat moving along the river, the team recovered 1.88 kg of heroin concealed in 154 soap cases and 10,000 Yaba tablets.
The accused has been identified as Javien Vaiphei, a resident of Jiribam district in Manipur. He was apprehended on the spot while allegedly transporting the contraband through the river route.
Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen, addressing the media, said the operation was conducted based on reliable inputs. He confirmed that heroin and Yaba tablets were seized from the possession of the accused, and a case has been registered.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the black market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs 14 crore,” Sen said. He added that the consignment was allegedly brought from Manipur and was meant for trafficking to other states.
Police said the crackdown on narcotics will continue as part of the ongoing war on drugs by Cachar Police and Assam Police.
