Early Morning Blaze Guts Electronics Shop In Silchar’s Premtola
A massive fire broke out at Premtola in Silchar town in the early hours of Saturday (February 21), gutting a commercial establishment identified as Mokshita Lights. The blaze caused panic in the densely populated business street, though the larger locality narrowly escaped a major disaster.
According to locals, the first signs of the fire were noticed by newspaper hawkers who were out for early morning deliveries. They reportedly saw smoke billowing out of the shop and immediately began banging on the shutters of nearby establishments and shops to alert people. Hearing the commotion, locals woke up and promptly informed the Electricity Department as well as Fire and Emergency Services.
At least 4 fire tenders reached the spot and, after nearly an hour of sustained efforts, managed to bring the flames under control. However, by then, the shop had been completely gutted. The incident reportedly caused losses amounting to several lakhs of rupees.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially confirmed, a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze.
Meanwhile, some locals alleged that the owner of Mokshita Lights had earlier suffered a similar fire incident at his previous shop. They claimed that after the earlier establishment was gutted, the owner shifted operations to the present complex under a changed name. They also alleged that despite having keys, they didn’t open the shop, hinting at foul play.
However, there has been no official confirmation regarding this claim.
