Silchar Bypass Crime: Allegations of Gang Rape, Extortion, 1 arrested; Here’s what we know so far

Seven men allegedly raped a woman one by one while keeping her husband/partner hostage at knifepoint. This was reported at the police station through an FIR. The report then made headlines, making this one of the most brutal crime cases ever. The incident, as per the report filed at the police station, occurred on February 19, 2026, when the victim and her husband/partner were sitting in their car and were confronted by an SUV. According to their statement recorded in the report, seven to eight men walked out of the SUV and started beating them. The allegations include physical assault, sexual assault and rape by seven men, one by one. All this allegedly happened while the husband/partner was kept hostage at knifepoint—making him a witness to the incident.

While the above version is based on the FIR, what the preliminary investigation has found so far is different. Police confirmed that the FIR was indeed lodged and a case has been registered (177/26) under sections: 308(5)/310(2)/351(2)/61(2)/70(1)/76/79 of the BNS. The victim in this case was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for medical examination, and legal proceedings followed.

Officials reported that during the preliminary investigation, and based on the medical reports, the allegations of gang rape seem to be an “exaggerated” one. “There is no evidence so far to establish this as a gang rape,” confirmed sources close to the development. Cachar Police has so far arrested 25-year-old Nilotpal Das, a resident of Tapoban Nagar in Ashram Road, Silchar.

The investigation report further states: “With no mark of external injury on the body of the victim and the fact that all the clothes worn by her during the incident remain intact, it suggests the allegations of gang rape to be an exaggerated one.” Barak Bulletin has access to the medical report through sources in SMCH and can confirm that the statement in the police’s first investigation report – “No mark of external injury,” is as per the medical report.

Cachar Police showed a photograph of the arrested individual to the victim in this case, and the victim confirmed that he was one of the culprits. Arrested Nilotpal Das confessed that he was there during the reported incident. According to his statement, they found the couple inside the car in a “compromised situation” and used that to blackmail and extort money. Rs 10,000 was transferred using UPI. Das said they have carried out similar extortion as part of the group in the past as well, where they target parked cars, find couples inside the car, and then blackmail and demand money. He denied raping the woman or being a witness to any incident of gang rape.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, the Senior Superintendent of Cachar Police said: “This is a sensitive matter and currently under investigation. We have arrested one individual, and we are close to arresting others, identifying the Thar vehicle that has been reported. The case has been registered, and the police are investigating the matter.”

When asked if he could confirm or rule out rape, the officer responded: “We have just received the first investigation report, and it is too early to draw conclusions.” SSP Das mentioned that they will investigate the racket in question and break the nexus running extortion on the bypass.

Barak Bulletin spoke with the victim and her partner, too, and both of them independently stated that they stand by their allegations of gang rape and demand justice.

Please note, since this is a case of sexual assault, revealing the name of the victim, her partner, and her ex-husband could end up revealing her identity. Therefore, do not reveal the name of the victim or anyone in the comment section that could end up revealing her identity.
