Big Political Twist: Sushmita Dev Steps Down from Rajya Sabha
Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev has resigned from her membership of the Rajya Sabha with immediate effect on Wednesday (June 10), according to a resignation letter addressed to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan.
In the letter, Dev formally stepped down from the Upper House of Parliament and requested that her resignation be accepted immediately. She did not mention any reason for her decision.
“I do hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect,” she wrote in the letter.
Dev also expressed gratitude to the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and officials of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat for their support and cooperation during her tenure as a Member of Parliament.
The resignation has sparked political speculation, with reports suggesting that Dev’s future political plans may become clearer in the coming days. However, no official statement regarding her next move has been made so far.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media has added to the speculation surrounding Dev’s resignation. In the video, she is seen sharing a light moment with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during what appears to be a meeting. No details of the discussion are audible in the clip, and neither leader has publicly commented on its purpose.
The timing of the video has nonetheless fuelled political speculation, as it surfaced around the same time that Dev stepped down from the Rajya Sabha. While some observers have questioned whether the development could signal a move towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), there is currently no official confirmation from Dev or the BJP regarding any such possibility.
A former Congress leader, Dev left the party after the 2021 Assam Assembly elections and joined the Trinamool Congress. She was later elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.
