Child Sale Foiled in Silchar! Two-Year-Old Rescued, Six Behind Bars

A shocking case of alleged child trafficking came to light in Silchar after police rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old child during a raid and arrested six people, including the child’s parents and the alleged buyer. Police also seized Rs 57,900 in cash from the spot.

According to police, the incident took place at Berenga in Silchar on Saturday night (July 25). Acting on specific information, police raided a rented house where the child was allegedly being handed over in exchange for Rs 55,000. The child was rescued safely before the transaction could be completed.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Sultana Begum Laskar, a resident of Jhanjarbali in Sonai who reportedly had no children, had expressed her desire to adopt or obtain a child. She was allegedly introduced to a couple, Swapna Begum Laskar and her husband Bahar Uddin, who promised to arrange a child for her. They allegedly contacted Rajmul Ali and his wife Rosna Begum of French Nagar Forest Village under Dholai Police Station. The couple, who have four sons, allegedly agreed to hand over their youngest child for Rs 55,000.

The six people arrested in connection with the case have been identified as the child’s father Rajmul Ali, mother Rosna Begum, alleged buyer Sultana Begum Laskar, Navidul Islam Laskar, Nurul Islam Laskar and alleged middlewoman Swapna Begum Laskar. Police said the rescued child has been sent to a shelter home for protection while the investigation continues to identify any other persons linked to the alleged child trafficking network.

Speaking to the media, a local resident claimed he received a phone call at around 3 am informing him that a child was being sold at a rented quarter. He said he initially dismissed the information but later received another call asking him to come to a nearby wedding hall. There, he allegedly found two groups, one consisting of the child’s parents with the child and the other of the prospective buyers.

The resident alleged that when he questioned those present, they told him they had already visited a court for paperwork and were now finalising the deal. He claimed that Rs 55,000 was demanded for the child. According to him, the people present refused to proceed further and instead informed the authorities.

The local resident also alleged that the landlord, was aware of the activities and should have prevented them from continuing. He further claimed that unknown women frequently visited the rented building. These allegations have not been independently verified, and police have not confirmed any action against the landlord. The resident urged authorities to take strict legal action against everyone involved, including those willing to sell the child and those attempting to buy the child.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine whether the case is linked to a wider child trafficking network.
